August Study

Repairing Broken Altars

I Kings 18:22-32

A study to help Christians understand what type of condition their altar is in

IKing 18:22-32

22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

32    And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD:

IKing 18:38

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

The Number 12 in scripture speaks of governmental perfection or rule.

Our Lord chose twelve disciples. Mark 3:14

There were twelve tribes of Israel. Gen 49:28

The wall of New Jerusalem (Heaven)  has twelve foundations. Rev 21:14

The length, breadth, and height of the city are 12,000 furlongs. Rev 21:16

The Word of God said that Elijah took twelve stones to rebuild the alter. He did this to show that all the tribes of Israel should be joined in the worship of the Lord

The Fire will fall in our churches and on our alters when we have every stone in place

Below is a list of twelve things that are essential if we want the Holy Ghost to fall on and consume us

Classes meet Sundays and Thursdays, 9 P.M.

1.Desire (Sun. August 3,  Mother Margaret)

Matt 6:31-33

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

2 Chr 15:15

…for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them…

Isa 26:8-9

… the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early…

3. Love for God(Sun.Aug 10, Bro. Glenn)

Deut 6:5

5        And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Josh 22:5

5        But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

4. Commitment (Thurs.,Aug 14, Bro. Glenn)

Ps 37:4-5

4        Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5        Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Prov 16:3

3        Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

5. Revelation(Sun., August 17, Min. Terry)

Matt 16:13-18

13      When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14      And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15      He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16      And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17      And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18      And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

6. Burden (Thurs. Aug 21, Sis. Veronica)

Col 1:9-10

9        For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10      That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

John 17:8-9

8        For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

9        I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

7. Submission (Sun., Aug 24, Min. Leroy)

James 4:7-8

7        Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8        Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

1 Pet 2:13

13      Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake…

8. Obedience

Deut 11:26-28

26      Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;

27      A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:

28      And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but

Heb 13:17

17      Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

9. Holiness

Heb 12:14

14      Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Exod 15:11

11      Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

10. Attitude ( Thurs. Sept 4,Sister Pam)

Ps 51:10

10      Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

1        Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

11. Faith (Min. Benetta)

Heb 11:1-2

1        Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2        For by it the elders obtained a good report.

Heb 11:6

6        But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

12. Unity, Friday, Sept. 12(Pastor Sharon)

Acts 2:1-4

1        And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2        And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3        And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4        And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

If you have other responsibilities at the hour of prayer, have a moment of silence  and make up the prayertime during the day. Optional prayer times are:  6am, 3pm, 6pm.

If God leads you, prayer may be offered to the Lord 6x each day for 7 days.  If God leads you to pray this way, remember at the end of the week you would have prayed 42 times.  You may omit 6 & 9pm clock on Thursday (service night).  This will then give you a total of 40 separate times of prayer with the Lord.

You must wash and be dressed  each morning before you pray during this consecration. Come before the Lord dressed appropriately.  Remember, you are coming before the King.

Remember, many times in the Old Testament the words for prayer and praise were identical. Therefore, it is not only acceptable but mandatory to praise during these times with the Lord.  In other words, just don't use repetitous words in the natural, but  pray in the spirit and sing in the natural and in the spirit also.  All of the above is what prayer is about.

"And He gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare Gods people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure the fulness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ."

- Ephesians 4:11-15 (NIV)
